Meeli Jaaksoo about events in Tallinn
Meeli Jaaksoo, Convention Manager of Tallinn City Tourist Office & Convention Bureau, knows pretty well that Baltic region is perfect for different types of events. And she works hard with the whole Bureau to make life of event planner in Tallinn more comfortable.
- How do you choose venues, vendors, partners to cooperate with?
Tallinn Convention Bureau has been active for 17 years and has now more than 120 partners. Our aim is to introduce Tallinn as a conference and incentive destination. To provide free objective information on top conference facilities and services in Tallinn, to help event organisers to get in touch with relevant local contacts, we have to be well aware of the developments and services provided in the city. If a new venue opens or a new service provider starts, we always organise a face-to-face meeting to get to know the product or service and to discuss the co-operation possibilities.
- What are your most popular services among the event planners?
Tallinn has a great diversity of unique venues and at the moment the most popular service is our venue search tool at our website www.visittallinn.ee/convention/. There is an increase in the number of requests for receiving our newsletter. FAM tours and site inspections are also often demanded. What are the most memorable conferences or events? As Estonia is a small country, one of our benefits is that „everybody knows everybody“ and this makes special things possible. For example our President has given an opening speech at a conference and we have helped to organise a mini version of our song festival for a conference. One memorable conference was from Australia, where delegates donated money for a children’s charity.
- Did the economy crises affect your work? How did you cope with it?
Yes, during economic crises there was a slow down in Estonia’s conference industry. However, Estonia was not badly effected due to its unique conference services. We worked to assist those wanting to hold conference in Tallinn and worked very closely with our partners to insure that we were able to provide conferences to suit the economic climate.
- Why do you think your region is the best for meetings and incentives? What is your greatest potential?
Tallinn is still a new and undiscovered destination for many event organisers - a Nordic gem where modern meets medieval. With the best-preserved medieval Old Town (first mentioned in 1154) in the Northern Europe Tallinn has earned the city a place in the UNESCO´s World Heritage List. At the same time Tallinn is listed among the top 10 digital cities of the world, offering innovative and modern solutions for meetings and events. We can't forget to mention the compactness of the city where all the major landmarks are in walking distance and the airport is only 5 km from the city centre, this makes it especially easy to organise events in Tallinn and saves delegates’ precious time.
- What are you waiting from Baltic For Events Forum? Why will it be useful for event industry in Baltic countries?
We are very happy that the 1st Baltic For Events Forum will take place in Tallinn. It is a unique opportunity to show the event industry the potential of Tallinn as a creative destination and we do hope that everybody has a chance to discover Tallinn's possibilities and feel the charm of our city. It is great that the Baltics now have an event that brings attention to our current event industry. Estonians might at first seem reserved and quiet, but in our heart we are singing and very hospitable, willing always to deliver the best quality.
